HOW DO I FIND MY PURPOSE?

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

Have you ever wondered what your purpose in this life is? Have you felt like you were meant for something bigger, but you just don't what it is? You don't know where to look or how to start? It all seems a bit confusing. How do we begin to dissect our life to find the right pattern or calling? Let's explore this concept much closer.

Listen to the podcast episode on Spotify:

The universe is so enormous. We are tiny creations in a gigantic world. It’s easy to feel small. It's easy to feel lost. We ask ourselves things like..what are we doing here? Why am I here? What is my purpose? This is a question that has been on the minds of many since the dawn of the human race. What are we doing here, and how do we fit in? Many of us just want to know how to be happy, but we still need to find our direction.

Most of us have no clue what we want to do with our lives. As we learn and we grow we have different career aspirations. It takes time to learn what we’re good at and passionate about.

The first thing to remember is to be patient. With time comes wisdom. If you’re young, don’t feel like you have to have all the answers right now. Some people will go their ENTIRE lives without ever realizing their purpose. A good place to start is to talk about the concept of “life purpose”.

It’s SUCH a loaded question, isn’t it? When we talk about our purpose in life we think of a mystical cosmic mission that we were predestined to pursue. It’s as if your life is already determined and you have no choice in the matter... Ok, let’s avoid that stress from the start...

YOU have the power to determine the direction of your life. Not tomorrow, but today. You always have the power of choice. If you really want to figure it out, you need to get organized. Start new habits and form new routines. Start a morning routine.

I truly feel that what people are actually asking when they want to decide their life purpose is …”What can I do with my time that is significant and meaningful?”This is a much better question to ask yourself. It removes all the baggage from this "cosmic idea" of purpose. It's all bullshit. Like healing crystals, and Reiki... (sorry if you like those... no i'm not). Here’s another question for you that you may be able to relate to:

“Have you ever had those moments in your life where you’re enjoying yourself SO much that time just seems to slip away from you? You’re so passionate about something that you don’t want to stop. If you know what I’m talking about then you’ve had those moments where you don’t know whether 30 minutes or 3 hours just went by. You forget to eat. You forget to drink. As strange as this sounds, this is the universe talking to you. You should consider your passions first before anything else.

The people who have changed the world the most have always had a passion for what they did so much that they would do it for free. So, explore your passions. Stay positive and go forth!

Next, if you want to make the world a better place and impact a lot of people, find a problem, and figure out how to solve it.

That feeling of making a difference comes from doing something meaningful. Meaningful equals purpose. If you have no idea what doing something meaningful means to you, then you should explore what your values are, and go from there. Take your pick. Education, medical reform, poverty, world hunger.

Finally, think about the end of your life.

This was inspired by Stephen Covey's 7 habits of highly effective people. If you were to die tomorrow, what would you regret never doing? How do you want to be remembered? What do you want your tombstone to say? A bit morbid, sure, but this gives you perspective. It’s forward-thinking. When we look back at our lives, we don’t want regret.

We want to know that we lived a full and happy life.

Discovering your purpose in life comes down to finding those simple couple of things that are bigger than yourself.

It’s something that makes you get up in the morning and propels you forward with energy. Did you want to start your own business? Maybe build a community of your own?

The great Dostoyevsky said that “the mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.

So, how do you want to spend YOUR limited time here on earth? Do you want to let your life just move past you like a leaf blowing in the wind? Aimless, and wondering. If you want to live your purpose, you can't just sit around and wait for it to come to you. Like anything else in life you need to put the time in. Journal and write it down. Talk to other people. Explore your values. It should be treated as a priority like eating or sleeping. So, schedule it in.

"..The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away".

-Pablo Picasso
